There
is more to this story. Watson could not tell us, because Watson did not know.
The events occurred long after the partnership. They occurred long after
World War I, when Watson again offered Holmes his support. They occurred
after World War II, during which Holmes’ work with his contacts in Montenegro
and Tibet, for example, were invaluable to the British Government. This
period is unrecorded, as Holmes had indeed lost his Boswell. Holmes lived on,
as he still lives on. Those who doubt may go and seek in vain among the
London Times obituaries.
I can only hint at the details of
Holmes’ further exploits. These are known only to a very few. Fortuitously,
it was just a few years ago, right in the middle of Israel’s worst snowstorm
in 40 years, that I attended the wedding of my daughter’s friend. I am not
free to reveal her name [Her initials are C.S.]. She has an uncle on the
maternal side whose name I also cannot reveal. He holds a position of much
authority, the title of which I cannot reveal. Nor am I free to reveal the
name of the organization for which he works.
However, someday the world will know
the name of the man who found Adolph Eichmann and planned his capture.
Someday the world will know of the still unpublished exploits of a man who
returned to his ethnic roots and used the skills kept finely honed since 1914
to mastermind some of the most daring intelligence operations in history.
Although no word has yet appeared in
print, do not be surprised if one of these days you read in the same sentence
the words “Sherlock Holmes” and “Mossad.”
